Title Sheriff Charles A. Clark

Description Black and white photograph of Sheriff Charles A. Clark of Jefferson County, Colorado. Clark was born in Kentucky in 1833 and came to Golden, Colorado Territory in June 1859. On February 1, 1861 Clark was appointed Undersheriff of Jefferson County by Sheriff Edward Washington McIlhany. Clark was remembered for his tour of Golden in April of that year announcing to the citizens that the Civil War had started. On December 2, 1861 Clark was elected Justice of the Peace for the Montana District of Jefferson County, or present day Morrison. In April of In 1862, Clark purchased ranch property in the Montana District of Jefferson County located on the south side of present day Bear Creek just east of the Dakota Hogback. Clark was an active member of the Montana District Militia and participated in several expeditions against raiding Arapahoe and Cheyenne. On April 1, 1865 the Board of County Commissioners appointed Clark County Treasurer and in October of that year the Commissioners appointed Clark Sheriff of the County. In September of 1867 Clark built a grocery store in Golden on Washington Avenue. He died in Boulder, Colorado in 1903.
