Title Madeline Pearce and Elizabeth Kuhns, Female Deputy Sheriffs
Date 1985
Description Color photogrpah taken of Madeline Pearce, the first known female Deputy Sheriff to work at the Jefferson County, Colorado Sheriff's Department. She is depicted wearing the original green-grey uniform, with shoulder patch and grey (pink tan) trousers with green infantry stripe that was created by Sheriff Arthur Wermuth in 1957. Standing to Pearce's left is Lieutenant Elizabeth Kuhs wearing the traditional B class uniform of a full time deputy sheriff. Kuhns was hired in 1978 by Sheriff Harold E. Bray as a member of the first wave of female deputies to become state certifiied peace officers in the State of Colorado. Also seen in this photograph is Captain Robert Squires in plain clothes.
