Object Name Key, Jail
Description Jefferson County purchased five keys to operate the doors of the Jail built in 1958. The keys were made by Southern Steel in San Antonio, Texas and carried in a pouch attached the belt of a Jail Deputy. These keys were irreplaceable and expected to last the lifetime of the jail facility, but extraordinary lengths were taken to ensure these keys would never leave the inside of the jail. This key operated the back door to the Jail that connected the front lobby of the Sheriff's Administration with the inside of the jail. This was the route normally taken by the Sheriff to the inside of the jail because of its proximity to his office. The same key opened the door to the Trustee housing located behind the Booking Desk and at the far end of the main hallway in the Jail.
