Object Name Mug, Coffee
Description 8 oz. coffee mug used by Sheriff Harold E. Bray as a campaign artifact for the 1982 general election. The mug depicts an article written by the Colorado Transcript newspaper published on January 12, 1982 commemorating a unique moment in Bray's professional life. The incident involved Bray on an airliner in bound to Colorado from California at night. The airplane was flying at altitude over the Rocky Mountains when Bray glanced out of his window to notice what appeared to be an SOS signal coming from the ground. It appeared that the signal was aimed at the aircraft by a flashlight. As a Navy veteran, Bray recognized the signal as an SOS and notified the pilot who marked the location of the signal and radioed for assistance. Eventually, rescue teams on the ground found a stranded person who was lost and seeking help in any fashion possible. If it were not for Bray's key powers of observation, the person probably would have died on the mountainside. The newspaper article was transcribed to a coffee mug and handed out to voters during the election.
