Description |
Wood carving of a parrot perched on a swing in a birdcage. Carved all of one piece, the cage is suspended by a carved double loop and wood link to a fixed loop at top of cage. On the base of the carving is "Amos Snodgrass 1879." This carving was originally received at the offices of the Golden Transcript in 1938, in a wrapped cylindrical Quaker Oats box. According to a Dec. 15, 1938 Colorado Transcript article, sensationally titled "Bomb Shape Package Creates Big Stir at the Transcript Office," the cover of the package was inscribed: "Editors of the Colorado Transcript: Will you please see that the contents of this carton is given to the Golden Museum! Open it! You needn't be afraid - it isn't a BOMB - nor is it Quaker oats. It is a parrot - it can't swear, but it can swing. If the museum cares for this, I give it to them for their collection of old and new articles assembled. Best wishes to the museum at Golden, 'Cradle Town' of Colorado. Amos Snodgrass 564 South Franklin Street Denver." The article also transcribed the contents of a note that was attached to the cage. It read "This carving is one piece. It was cut from a tie that once laid on a bridge which crosses Kinney creek on Jackson street at Seventeenth street, Golden. This was the bridge that Seminole and Woodruff were hanged on in 1879 for murdering one Mr. Haywood - an honorable and good citizen - a ranchman who once lived on Lookout Mountain." |
