Fonds: Various essays, research, correspondence, and narratives written by Golden historian Richard Gardner, relating to the history of Golden. Many of these narratives and essays were written for an online local history group through Yahoo, called OldGolden. Topics include: * An articled titled "Spudnuts had rich history in sweet town of Golden," dated Sept. 25, 2003 and published on the website Colorado Community Media. * An email correspondence from Rick Gardner to City of Golden staff dated Sept. 12, 2008, in which Gardner discusses his passion and pursuit of collecting artifacts related Golden businesses, and the types of objects he's acquired over the years * An email correspondence to City of Golden staff, dated March 17, 2009, discussing the presence of an historical artifact, a piece of cut granite stone associated with the 1882 construction of the Washington Avenue Bridge. * An essay dated March 31, 2009 discussing the 75th anniversary of the "Avenue Flashes" feature in the Colorado Transcript. This feature had, to that point, only three authors: Horace Fleet Parsons, (1934-1947), Virginia Miller Weigand ((1947-1987), and Dorothy Akal (from 1987). * An essay dated June 20, 2009, marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of Golden on June 20, 1859. * An essay dated June 21, 2009 marking the anniversaries of Golden's Safeway, which opened on June 21, 1934, and The Chicago Saloon, which opened June 21, 1859. * An email correspondence dated June 27, 2009 discussing the acquisition and disposition of historic Golden business signs, including the Foss General Store sign; Jeffco Blueprints sign; Hatch's Books sign; Jack's Pharmacy sign; and the Lilly Langtrees sign. * An essay dated Sept. 30, 2009 discussing the dedication of the newest Washington Ave. bridge, and sharing details and observations about its design and construction. * A short essay dated Oct. 26, 2009 presenting a brief history of the town of Mt. Vernon, including the Mt. Vernon School and Mt. Vernon House. |
