Fonds: Various essays, research, correspondence, and narratives written by Golden historian Richard Gardner, relating to the history of Golden. Many of these narratives and essays were written for an online local history group through Yahoo, called OldGolden. Topics include: * Correspondence to Golden History Museum staff regarding review of historical details of certain topics including Golden Opera House; Colorado's first territorial capital as Colorado City; the Miniature City; Golden's Cemetery Hill; Golden's flour mills; Koenig Mercantile Company; Foss General Store; discussion of whether Meyer's Hardware or the Transcript is the oldest continuously functioning business; name changes of the Golden museum over the years. * A narrative of a walking tour that Gardner gave to members of the Golden Masonic lodge on the occasion of their 150th anniversary, with highlights of local areas of interest. * An entertaining essay drafted on Aug. 27, 2010 regarding the history of the decorative brick traffic speed sign "safety post" in the 800 block of Washington Ave., recounting other vehicle & traffic safety posts placed in the area, chiefly at 10th St. and Washington Ave., since the early 20th century * A narrative written Nov. 30, 2010 acknowledging the 150th anniversary of Golden as Territorial Capital, and recounting the history of the events of 1860-1861 * A short biographical essay focusing on Buffalo Bill Cody, drafted July 24, 2010, in honor of Buffalo Bill's Golden Sesquicentennial. * A short paragraph drafted Dec. 31, 2010, noting that the Columbine Bar located at 15630 South Golden Road, turned 75, the third Golden bar to achieve this milestone. * An essay written Sept. 30, 2010 regarding the history of the Briarwood Inn, at that time "one of the longest lasting stand-alone restaurants in Golden's history." * An essay drafted Dec. 31, 2010 acknowledging area institutions that celebrated milestone anniversaries in 2010, including The First Presbyterian Church (140 years old); the Parfet Estate (135 years old); the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center (130 years old); the Metropolitan Barber Shop (130 years old); the Golden Auto Clinic (90 years old); The Golden Chamber of Commerce (90 years old); Golden Bowl (55 years old); Rolling Hills Country Club (55 years old); Calvary Baptist Church in Pleasant View (55 years old); and Vitamin Cottage (55 years old). * An essay written Sept. 30, 2010 discussing Golden's oldest stand-alone restaurants through time, noting that the only stand alone Golden restaurant to last over 40 years to date was Pizza Hut, which had been operational since 1969. Other long-lasting restaurants listed include Foss Carriage Room/Golden Ram; Golden Cafe/Lilly Langrees; and Joyce's subs/D'Deli. * An email correspondence dated May 4, 2010 to museum staff, wherein Gardner lists fast-food establishment's in Golden's history, including: Lila & Tip's Dairy Cream; Spudnut Shop; A&W; Steak-N-Shake; Dairy Queen; and The Cow Palace. He also mentioned in passing that Golden resident Clyde Mannon had known Allen Arthur Davis who died at Pearl Harbor, and Melvin C. Steele of the 10th Mountain Division, who died in northern Italy during WWII. |
