Notes |
Died at 96 years old Son of a Golden Gate Canyon homesteader, Joseph Otto Jully Jr. (1883-1980) spent most of his life on the ranch his father homesteaded in 1886. Joe, as he was known, was attracted to photography as a young man, purchased a camera from a neighbor and quickly found his niche taking photographs of the daily canyon life he knew so well. His photographs document a wide range of subject matter from social gatherings with his neighbors, local landscapes, and a number of self portraits with his hunting trophies-Joe loved to hunt. Most of Joe's photographs were taken between 1905 and 1914, when he was still a bachelor living at home. In 1914 Joe married a neighbor girl from another pioneer family, named Katherine "Kitty" Tripp, and turned his attention to ranching instead of photography. Golden History Museums acquired 53 of Joe's historic photographs in 2012 from his daughter, Lena Baughman. This priceless body of work represents a light-hearted record of canyon life from 100 years ago. |
