Interred in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, Virginia. Leslie Kimball Sunderlin was the last descendent of Gen. George and Eliza West. The following poignant letter was transcribed from a Golden Transcript letter to the editor from Leslie Sunderlin, dated May 24, 1971: "Berryville,Virginia. To the Editor: Recently I recieved a copy of your April 26 edition and cannot resist correcting some misapprehensions in your front page editorial. First, there are no descendants or relatives of General West in the Golden or Denver area. George West was the only one of his family ever to leave New England. He and his wife (Eliza Boyd) reared two sons and a daughter. The oldest son died in 1902, leaving no children. The second son, Harley, and his daughter, an only child, both died in 1927. His grandson died two years later. The daughter, my mother, Marguerite West Kimball, died here in Virginia in 1949, leaving two children. My brother Neil died here two years later without issue, leaving me the one surviving lineal descendant of George and Eliza West. The transcript was operated at varioius times by my two uncles, my father, my brother, Harley's widow, and her second husband, Fleet Parsons. As to the flag used before the present one in color, my sister-in-law informs me that it was drawn by Frank Miller, a well-known artist and cartoonist in Colorado during the 20's and 30's. I regret being unable to claim the noted attorneys and breeders of race horses. It would raise my standing in this horsey country in which I live. Sincerely Yours, Mrs. Glen Sunderlin (Leslie Kimball Sunderlin) |
