"M" on Mount Zion |
Details |
The Colorado School of Mines "M" stands for Miners, as the students used to be called. Designed in 1905 by senior, Joseph O'Byrne, the "M" was not built until 1908. The 104-foot-by-107-foot M-blem is composed of white-washed stones, each weighing roughly six pounds. Uniquely, this first hillside letter in Colorado is mathematically designed to appear undistorted from any angle. In 1932, the "M" became the first landmark letter to be lighted using electricity. |
