Eakers Department Store |
Details |
Richard Gardner shared the following in January 2021: Eakers Department Store was once located at 1117 Washington Avenue (Store #6). Robert Gaines Eaker opened the store there in 1953, as one of his Colorado-based chain of department stores. It was he who did the major renovation of the building to its Modernist appearance. Eakers was a main retail anchor for downtown Golden for so long as it operated. During the latter 1960s it got a wood canopy (as part of the downtown movement) and the A.G. Eaker sign was relocated to the back while a new, translucent green cursive script Eakers sign was placed atop the front. The store operated from 1953-1988 when the chain went out of business (as is Golden's tragic story and the case with Hesteds and Hatchs, Eakers was a top performer in its chain, it was the chain that took it down). After that Ken Mueller purchased the place and converted it to the Buffalo Rose dance hall. |
