Lookout Mountain Park Funicular |
Details |
Built by Rees Vidler and his Lookout Mountain Park Development Co. to access Lookout Mountain Park. Construction started in 1911 and the route formally opened in July 1912 with Denver Mayor Henry J. Arnold and Colorado Gov. John F. Shafroth driving the last spike. The funicular railway was a 2,740-foot incline with a 67 percent grade. It operated until the fall of 1916; it closed due to bankruptcy and went into foreclosure in 1919. Visitors rode by trolley from Denver to Golden and then hiked or boarded a Stanley Steamer, which took them to the loading station at the base of the incline. Also called Lookout Mountain Funicular. Today all that remains is a narrow cut on the northwest slope of the mountain just below the radio towers. |
