On May 31, 1929, a group of young women organized a local chapter of the Delphian Study Club, and were chartered by the national organization based in Chicago. The group organized in the Fireside Room of the Alpine Drug Store in downtown Golden, CO. Mrs. F. G. Hills, a former Delphian member was asked to be temporary chairman and presided at the meeting. Louise E. Jones was named temporary secretary. The Delphian Society was a Chicago based organization which encouraged women whose study had been interupted by marriage or careers to further their education.Enrollment required purchase of a set of books at a cost of $90. When names were suggested for the chapter, "Pioneer" received the most votes. Mrs. J. Burns Read was elected the first president. In the years that followed the group met twice each month and studied everything from the classics to modern world politics. In 1980 the group wrote a book, "A Woman's Life in Golden, 1902-1980." |
