St. Joseph's Catholic Church |
Details |
Founded in 1867 with Bishop Joseph Projectus Machebeuf as first presiding minister. The first chapel stood at the northeast corner of today's 14th and Ford Streets, the wooden church, measured 20x50 feet, was built by contractor John G. Hendrickson and described by the Transcript as "a neat, modest edifice, and an ornament to the town." The chapel didn't have a bell yet, but would at last get one in 1874. The Transcript had this to say about about their first service held on MAy 19, 1867: "THE CATHOLIC SERVICE. - Rev. Father Machebeuf held service for the first time on last Sabbath in the new Catholic Chapel that has recently been erected here; although the weather was quite disagreeable, from a continual fall of snow and rain during the day, the house was crowded by an attentive and interested congregation. The building has not yet been completed inside, but temporary seats were furnished, and an altar erected and ornamented very testily after the peculiar manner of the Romish Church. The splendid choir of the Catholic Church in Denver was present, and added greatly to the interest of the occasion by their excellent performance. Father M. did not intend this service as a dedication of the chapel, as this building is intended merely to serve temporarily, until the fine brick church which he has in contemplation is erected, when this will be used as a school-house. We believe a priest will be settled here permanently as soon as practicable, but we did not learn his name. Father Machebeuf has certainly displayed great energy in carrying forward this enterprise, and doubtless a large flock will be gathered here to worship in this modest little edifice." Originally diverse congregation of several languages and known to worship in English and German. First permanent home at today's 1323 Ford Street used in 1867-1899. Second permanent home at 510 14th Street used in 1899-1958. Third permanent home at 1401 East Street used in 1958-1984. Fourth and current permanent home at 969 Ulysses Street used in 1984-today. |
