Description |
Black and white photograph of the Jefferson County Courthouse and Jail opened for government business in 1878. Photograph depicts the destruction of the building in 1963 when the County moved the Courthouse and Jail to the 1600 block of Arapahoe Street. This view is looking east to the front of the former Courthous and Jail that was physically located on the northeast corner of 15th and Washington Avenue in Golden. The bottom level of the building as seen as mortored brick was the outside wall of the jail. The entrance to the jail is seen covered by debris on the lower lever. The middle level was used as the District Courtroom and later as a museum. A typed label adhered to back of photo reads "In a swap between Golden and Jefferson County, land was obtained for a new court house, on Arapahoe between 16th and 17th. Commissioner Joe Lewis Purchased the old building for $30,000, and had it demolished in 1963. The new court house was finished in 1953." |
