Black and white photograph of the five members of the Futile Five playing a show at Golden High School. From left to right are Bill Clark on tuba, Artie Katona on trombone, Richard Jurney on drums, Phil Mason on trumpet, and Tom Dunham on piano. Standing on the far right behind a microphone is Everett Barnhardt. The "Futile Five" was a local traditional jazz band composed of five young men from Golden High School. Members included, Arthur Katona on trombone, Bill Clark on bass horn, Tom Dunham on piano, Philip Mason on trumpet, and Richard Jurney on drums. Occasionally, Bob Burdick played with the group and they called themselves The Futile Five Plus One. The group formed in 1956 and played local gigs with a good-size following until 1960. |
