Description |
Black and white photo of several young men dressed in tank tops and shorts, running while pulling a fire department hose cart. One man to right is holding the hose and running toward a fire hydrant located to far right of image. Below image is handwritten in black marker "1937 Golden, CO Fire Dept." and "We were all members of the Fire Dept." Written below the fire hydrant is "*Real Plug Real Water." There are names formed by adhesive letters associated with many of the men in the photo. They are last names only and include: (L-R) Grenfell (Thomas), Watkins (Sheldon), Halinan (possibly Hallinan, Ralph), Reeves (Paul G.), Sarrell (possibly Sarell, Allen or Ed), Shepard (Ray), McNease (Albert), Armstrong (Sidney), Nankervis (Robert M.), Anderson (Raymond), and Plank (John). Photograph is mounted onto a piece of goldenrold cardstock. Below photograph is a caption: "It's Called "Wet Test." We competed in small towns all over colorado in 1936, 1937 & 1938." There is a mailing label attached to the lower left corner of the image. |

The Golden Fire Department often participated in tournaments and competitions including a competition called a "Wet Test." The wet test is a race that involved the team running 600 feet pulling a hose cart, and making a connection at a fire plug to put water through the fire hose. |
