Description |
Color photograph with an aerial view of the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, dated June 26, 2001. On the back is adhered a label which reads "Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site. The Rocky Flats Site is a 6,380-acre Superfund cleanup site located 8 miles north of downtown Golden. Until December 1989, the Rocky Flats plant produced components for nuclear weapons using various radioactive and hazardous materials, including plutonium, uranium and beryllium. Nearly 40 years of nuclear weapons production left behind a legacy of contaminated facilities, soils, and grown water that must now be cleaned up before the site can be closed down.
