Description |
Framed black and white photograph of the Metropolitan Barbershop. This photo was reprinted in the December 4, 1974 Golden Transcript, with a caption that reads: "The cost of a shave and a haircut may have hovered around two bits when this photograph was taken in Golden in June of 1920, according to the calendar on the wall. It's the old Metropolitan Barber Shop, located on Washington Avenue where the north end of Hested's Department Store is now. Elmer Grazier is leaning on the back barber chair and supplied the photo. He lives at 2001 East St. now. At the front chair is Clive (Shorty) Straight and in the middle is Gib Reeves, both of whom are dead. According to Elmer, the spittoon at the right had to be polished daily - by the barbers themselves, if no porter was working at the time. Barbers Straight and Reeves were in the shop until Gib's health failed and the shop closed up. Elmer opened his own shop, known as the "M" Barber Shop, at the corner of 12th and Washington, where Frank Leek's barber shop is now. Elmer retired in 1957. The photo isn't quite clear enough to show the names on all the shaving mugs in the tall cabinet at the rear of the shop, but it's a safe bet there would be some which would still be well-known in Golden today. Elmer says he doesn't know who killed the bear and the deer whose heads adorn the walls. The identity of the man in Shorty's chair is not known either." |
