Description |
Black and white photograph of mash barrels and a liquor still, along with assorted attachments for the still, taken in the open space immediatly south of the 1914 Sheriff's residence and Jail located at 15th and Washington Avenue in Golden, Colorado. The stills were confiscated by Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies and later personally destroyed by Sheriff Walter H. Johnson. The photograph also depicts a chain link fence that housed chickens to feed the inmates. Taped to back of photo is a typed note containing background information on moonshining in Jefferson County. The text reads: "In the 1920's moonshining was big business in Jefferson County. The Sheriff had no place to put confiscated stills except for outside the Sheriff's Office and Jail. In the 1950's these stills would be replaced with confiscated slot machines." |
