Black and white press photo of Col. Wendell W. Fertig. Caption of back of photo says, Heroic Service was awarded officially Wednesday when the army's Distinguished Service Medal was presented to Col. Wendell W. Fertig of Golden, Colo., for his leadership of American and native guerrilla forces on Mindanao in the Philippines from 1943-1945. Brig. Gen. Omar H. Quade, commanding general of Fitzsimons General hospital, is shown here pinning the medal on Colonel Fertig during ceremonies at the Colorado School of Mines, where the colonel now is professor of military science and tactics. |
