Description |
Black and white photograph of the Astor House grand re-opening by owner Seth Lake in 1881. A crowd of people are standing in front of the building at 822 12th Street in Golden. More people are standing on the second floor wooden balcony. A small one story house is located to the North with a unknown woman holding a child standing in the doorway. Visible on the North side of the building is the wording "Astor House". |
Provenance |
To help celebrate a new remodel, Lake hired Fred Sears to plant a couple of sticks of dynamite across the street. "Time came for the opening of the Astor House and the blast went off," Carlos Lake told Irene Goetze years later. "We opened everything in the neighborhood and blew out every window in Judge De France's building and most of the hotel windows. The boys thought if a little dynamite would be good a lot would be better." |
