According to literature that came with the presentation box (see booklet 1761.c), the wood from this box was made from the wood of the Flagship Niagara which rested at the bottom of Lake Erie since 1820, when it was sunk for preservation a few years after the Battle of Lake Erie and the War of 1812. According to the booklet dated ca. 1944, the wood of the box "is more than a century old." |
