Cornerstone sitting outdoors at the Golden History Center on the creek-side patio. UPDATE: Cornerstone was moved from GHC to offsite storage at Denver West on 10/2/2017. According to the Colorado Transcript May 1933: "Corner Stone Laying Will Attract Many Citizens of All Ages Have an Interest in Ceremony The entire student body of the grade and high school should witness the laying of the corner stone of the new Golden Central school building. Fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers will all want to be present, for building of this magnificent, thoroughly modern, fireproof structure is a big step forward in the advancement of education in Golden. There are quite a number of Golden citizens, still living here, who attended the South school when that building was first constructed in 1873, three years before Colorado became a state. These folks are grandparents now. From that day to this practically all the people who have grown up in Golden, have received their education within its walls. Now there is to be a change. Due to the efforts of Supt. Roger Q. Mitchell and the district school board, Dr. H. V. Crawford, Dr. L. C. Anderson and Mrs. Bernice Eyer, the children of this community are going to have advantages such as their parents and grandparents never knew. As the years roll by it will be a great thing for these children to be able to say, when I was a youngster, I saw the laying of the corner stone of that school building. At 3 o'clock on the afternoon of Monday, May 11, with appropriate ceremony the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Colorado will pass the stone from which all measurements for the construction of the new building will be made. Sealed within the stone will be placed corn, wine and oil. It will then be put into position by the aid of the plumb, level and square, a comparative easy operation for those trained in the craft. The address, on behalf of the Grand Lodge will be delivered by Brother Haslett P. Burke, most worshipful past grand master, after which "Hail Masonry Divine" will be sung. The benediction will be pronounced by the grand chaplain and the ceremony will be closed with the band playing "the Star Spangled Banner." |
