Carlos was born in Dekalb, Illinois in 1852. He came to Golden with his parents in 1860 and lived for a while south of Golden at Apex Junction. His father, Seth, built the Astor House in Golden and the family moved there in 1862. As a boy, Carlos won the friendship of Ute Chief Colorow. In 1874, he joined the Goden Excelsior Fire and Hose Company NO. 1 and was elected assistant chief in 1875, 1877 and 1878. In 1877, Carlos participated in the infamous kidnapping of Judge Stone of the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1879, Carlos was elected Chief of the Fire Department. In 1880, he left the fire department when he was appointed Golden City Marshal. In the meantime, he owned a feed and livery business in Golden. He operated a stagecoach line and in 1889 he purchased part interest in grocery store with former Colorado Governor John Vivian. Carlos was appointed Deputy Sheriff in 1878 by Sheriff John W. Belcher and the same year married Alfaretta Maynard and had his first child. He was elected Sheriff of Jefferson County for one term in 1898 and in 1901 and took a job managing the Avenue Hotel in Golden. In 1901 Carlos and his family moved to Pueblo, Colorado. In 1912 he moved to Denver and opened a cigar store.Alfretta died in 1931 and Carlos moved in with his daughter on West 41st Street in Denver to live for the rest of his life. He was losing his eye sight and was often seen by neighbors walking with a white cane. He died at his daughter's home on 322 East Center Avenue of a heart attack on December 17, 1945.
