Interred in Golden Cemetery, Golden, Colorado. Laura and her husband settled in Golden in 1869. A handwritten note recovered with duplicates of images of Gayton in her Red Cross uniform reads: "Mrs. Laura A. Gayton. That name will always bring to mind one of God's grandest women in every sense of the word. From the first days of the war to the signing of the armistice and still on when the call to help the refugees came, has she labored and by her cheerful personality made it a pleasure for others to help her fulfill her quotas of work sent from Headquarters. This is the third war in which she has served her country and being 70 years old her next birthday has not seemingly affected her ability to still do a lion's share of the work in her department of the American Red Cross. (An appreciation from one of her workers.")" |
